The Saint Lazarus Church History

Alexandria Parish was founded in 1955 and dedicated to The Holy Great Martyr Saint Lazarus. Father Ilija Bulovan secured the use of St.Mark's Anglican Church in Alexandria for services, and then in 1961, the property was purchased from Anglican Church.
S
ince then, the church has undergone a number of renovations, most notably in the 1970's when its Altar was relocated so as to face east, and then again seven years ago when extensive rebuilding was undertaken and which is now in its final stages of completion. In 1969 Father Bulovan formaly retired, but continued to assist whenever and wherever possible. He was succeeded by Father Svetozar Sekulic. For three decades, these two servants of the Lord, dedicated their lives to establishing the foundations and life of our parish and indeed the Church as a whole in Australia.

Father Milan Zbiljic arrived from Kragujevac in1981 and remained parish priest until 1989. His undivided dedication to his parsh during a period of spiritual and cultural re-awakening, particularly amongst newly arrived Serbs, attracted many people to church.

Regular services through the week and the flourishing of the Serbian School and Scripture, language and folkdance were taught to the younger generation.

Father Rade Radan moved from St.Sava's Church in Adelaide in 1991, to become parish priest at St. Lazarus.
In those ten years church has been rebuilt from the foundation, a rich tapestry has been painted, the Altar beautified.
Born in Australia, but educated in Belgrade, fatherRade brought first concert of classical music in a church, first recital with actors, poets and writers from Serbia.
First in Australia, the choir is established performing works by Mokranjac and Rahmaninov.
Church is organising talks and discussion on spiritual matters. Fundraising and the collection of humanitarian aid for Serbia has been a major task for our parish over last decade.

Father Miodrag Peric was appointed as Parish Priest to the St. Lazarus Church at a start of 2002. Prior to his arrival to our Parish, he served in Rooty Hill(St. Stephan) for more than one decade.
As some of you may recall, Father Miodrag was friend of our church for all that time, taking part in our Liturgical services and celebration, as well.
He is hard worker and through his exacting, dedicated guidance, much was initiated, launched, and established.
Father Miodrag welcomes any questions or comments which you may have regarding Orthodoxy: E-mail on
